It’s day 4 of 30 Days of Cozy and I’m so excited to introduce you to Ashley from The Loopy Lamb. I was so drawn to Ashely’s cactus designs so I asked her to create one just for you….and she designed 2! The first one comes to you today! He’s a barrel cactus who always wanted to be a snowman. Like Frosty, he just doesn’t love the warmer weather. Today, Ashley brings you Stanly the Cactus Snowman crochet pattern. I know you’re just going to love having him sit on your shelf this winter!

Meet Ashley Parker

Ashley Parker is a crochet artist and designer that lives in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada with her wonderful husband and 2 sweet children. • 3.5 mm Hook
• Worsted Weight Yarn in Green, Brown, Red, and Orange
• 8 mm Safety Eyes
• Polyester Stuffing
• Scissors
• Tapestry Needle
• Stitch marker
• Beads to decorate hat (optional)

• Measurement(s):  Approximately 8.5” tall from bottom of soil to top of hat once assembled.
• No matter your skill level, I always suggest that you read through the pattern from beginning to end before beginning your work just to be sure you don’t have any questions that might cause frustration in the midst of your project.

Stanley the Cactus Snowman Crochet Pattern

Soil

Row  1:  Using  brown  yarn,  make  a  MC  and  SC  6  into  the  MC (6)
Row  2:  (SCINC)  x  6  (12)
Row  3:  (SCINC,  SC  1) x 3  (18)
Row  4:  SC,  SCINC,  (SC  2,  SCINC) x  5,  SC  1  (24)
Row  5:  (SCINC,  SC  3) x  6  (30)
Row  6:  SC  2,  SCINC  (SC  4,  SCINC) x  5,  SC  2  (36)
Rows  7  –  16:  SC  around  (36)
Row  17:  SC  2,  SCDEC,  (SC  4,  SCDEC) x  5,  SC  2  (30)
Row  18:  (SCDEC,  SC  3)  x  6  (24)
Row  19:  SC,  SCDEC,  (SC  2,  SCDEC) x  5,  SC  1  (18)

Large Portion of Cactus Body

Using green and leaving a long tail, CH20.

Row 1: SC in the 2^nd chain from the hook and in each chain across.  CH1 and turn. (19)
Row 2: SC in the first stitch.  SC in the back loop of the next 17 stitches.  SC under both loops of the last stitch (19)
Repeat row 2 until the piece measures 16 cm.
FO, leaving a long tail.  Work a running stitch along the long side of the cactus, working into the row ends.  Pull the yarn tight to close the cactus (like a drawstring).  Without fastening off, seam the two short sides together by putting the needle through the bottom loop of both stitches to recreate the ribbing effect for the seam.  Stuff firmly.  Work a running stitch along the open edge and pull tightly to close the cactus completely.  Secure and weave in your ends.  Sew onto soil.

Small Portion of Cactus Body/Head

Using green and leaving a long tail, CH16.

Row 1: SC in the 2^nd chain from the hook and in each chain across.  CH1 and turn. (15)
Row 2: SC in the first stitch.  SC in the back loop of the next 17 stitches.  SC under both loops of the last stitch (15)
Repeat row 2 until the piece measures 12 cm.
FO, leaving a long tail.  Insert your safety eyes slightly above the middle of the piece with 2 rows between them. Work a running stitch along the long side of the cactus, working into the row ends.  Pull the yarn tight to close the cactus (like a drawstring).  Without fastening off, seam the two short sides together by putting the needle through the bottom loop of both stitches to recreate the ribbing effect for the seam.  Stuff firmly.  Work a running stitch along the open edge and pull tightly to close the cactus completely.  Secure and weave in your ends. Sew the head tightly onto the body.

Arms

Using brown yarn, CH 7
Row 1: SL ST into the 2^nd CH from the hook.  SL ST into the next stitch.  CH 3 and SL ST into the first CH.  SL ST into the remaining stitches (6)
FO and sew onto either side of the body.

Top Hat

Row 1: Using black yarn, make a MC and SC 6 into the ring. (6)
Row 2: (SCINC) x 6 (12)
Row 3: (SCINC, SC 1) x 3 (18)
Row 4: (SC  8, SCINC) x 2 (20)
Row 5: In the BLO, SC in the first stitch and in each stitch around. (20)
Rows 6 –8: SC in each stitch around. (20)
Row 9: (SC 8, SCDEC) x 2 (18)
Row 10: SC in each stitch around. (18)
Row 11: (SC 7, SCDEC) x 2 (16)
Row 12: In the FLO, (SC1, SCINC) X 8 (24)
Rows 13 – 14: Working in both loops, SC in each stitch around. (24)
Row 14: (SC 1, SCINC) x 8 (32)
Row 15: SL ST in each stitch around. (27)
FO and leave a long tail for sewing the hat onto the head.  If using beads to decorate the hat, add them now.  Lightly stuff the hat to help keep its shape. Sew onto head.

Nose

Row 1: Using orange yarn, make a MC and SC 3 into the ring (3)
Row 2: (SCINC) x 3 (6)
Rows 3 – 4: SC around (6)
FO and leave a long tail to attach to the head.

Scarf

Using red yarn, CH 61.
Row 1: SC in the 2^nd stitch from the hook and in each stitch across. CH1 and turn.  (60)
Row 2: SC in the first stitch and in each stitch across (60)
FO and weave in ends.  Wrap the scarf around the cactus, just above the arms and you can either sew the scarf onto body at the point where the scarf crosses over itself or tie the scarf to the cactus.
