McKenna Super Bulky Cowl Crochet Pattern Instructions
When the days are cold, the wind is howling and the snow is falling, there’s nothing more perfect than this chunky lace cowl to stave off the winter chill.
For Fashionistas:
If you’re looking for a chunky cowl in the perfect color to go with your favorite outfit or that little black dress, this is the one for you! Made of a soft, wool-blend yarn, the short cowl will keep you warm both day and night.
For Makers:
As always, I designed this cowl with a seller’s mentality. It had to be beautiful, quick to make and have the potential for a good profit margin. As a business owner these things are key to a successful product….oh, and the fact that it might be popular with my target market!
And it was!
I made this cowl in almost every available color of Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick and came home with very few left in inventory after my busiest craft fair season.

- Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick, super bulky weight #6 yarn. (80% acrylic, 20% wool, 106 yds/97 m per 6 oz/170 g skein).
- 1 skein in color of your choice
- 10.00 mm (N) Crochet Hook
- Scissors
- Sewing needle

- Construction: Worked in the round
- Cowl is crocheted loosely to create a nice drape to the piece.
- The Double V Cluster and the individual DC sts stack directly on top of one another for this pattern, rather than alternating. See swatch image.

Gauge Swatch
You’ll make the full swatch and then measure to ensure you’re meeting gauge.
The swatch will be a rectangle.
The pattern repeat is [SK 2 sts, (2DC, CH1, 2DC) in next st, SK 2 sts, DC]. Let’s use it to make a swatch following these instructions:
CH 21 loosely.
Row 1: (2DC, CH1, 2DC) in sixth CH from hook, SK 2 sts, DC. [SK 2 sts, (2DC, CH1, 2DC) in next st, SK 2 sts, DC]. Repeat from [ to ] one more time. (3 Pattern Repeats)
Row 2: CH3, turn. [(2DC, CH1, DC) in CH1-sp from the cluster below, DC in next DC], Repeat from * one time. (2DC, CH1, DC) in next CH-1 sp, SK 2 sts, DC in next st (into the 3rd CH of the foundation CH)
Row 3: CH3, turn. [(2DC, CH1, DC) in CH1-sp from the cluster below, DC in next DC], Repeat from * one time. (2DC, CH1, DC) in next CH-1 sp, SK 2 sts, DC in the 3rd CH of beg CH-3.
Lay flat and measure gauge. If larger, move down a hook size. If smaller, move up a hook size.
McKenna One-Hour Cowl Crochet Pattern
With 10.00 mm hook and super bulky yarn, loosely CH60.
Being careful not to twist, join with SLST to beg CH.
RND 1: CH3 (counts as DC here and throughout), [SK 2 sts, (2DC, CH1, 2DC) in next st, SK 2 sts, DC, skip 2 sts]. Repeat [ to ] 8 more times. SK 2 sts, (2DC, CH1, 2DC) in next st, SK 2 sts, join with SLST to top of beg CH3. (10 pattern repeats total)
RND 2: CH3, [(2DC, CH1, 2DC) in CH-1 sp from cluster below, DC in DC from row below]. Repeat [ to ] 8 more times. (2DC, CH1, 2DC) in next CH-1 sp, Join with SLST to top of beg CH3. (10 pattern repeats)
RND 3 – 8 Repeat Rnd 2.
Fasten off. Tuck ends.
