Introducing Crochet Heart Pillows for Valentine’s (or every) Day

So, I don’t know about you, but my kids are grown and my grandgirls live far away – buying Valentine’s Day gifts isn’t as easy as it used to be…you’d just buy a heart-shaped box of chocolate and you were good! My kids don’t like chocolate and the girls live in a warm climate that makes sending chocolates a bad idea. I had to think of something unique…

So, when I sat down to decide what to make everyone that would show them how much they’re loved this Valentine’s Day I thought of one of my favorite childhood treats…conversation hearts!

Don’t you remember these little sweet treats when you were young? Those little candies tasted just as sweet as the quirky and cute sayings written on them. Whenever I received a box, I’d open them up and sort them by colors and sayings and then eat them one by one.

I thought a conversation heart pillow might be just as sweet a gift but in a slightly larger form. So, I whipped up these cuties, stitched on a special message for each of my dear Valentines, and added a secret pocket on the back to hold a little box of candies and a gift card. (I’m convinced that a gift card is the new ‘box o’ chocolates’ – you never know what you’re gonna get!)

You can stitch up these babies in just about an hour so there’s still time to make one for everyone you love. They’re also great for teacher’s gifts, thank you gifts, and a special something to leave on your partner’s pillow on Valentine’s Day morning.

Crochet Conversation Hearts Pillows

Sizing and Yardage

The finished size is 7.5″ tall by 8.5″ wide. This pattern is worked by holding 2 strands of the main color together as you work. To adjust the size, experiment with thicker and thinner yarns, single or triple strands, and larger or smaller hook sizes. You can make a myriad of sizes!

As written, you’ll need approximately 120 yards of the main color (MC) and 3 yards of the contrasting color (CC).

Materials

• 120 yards size 4 yarn. I used Red Heart Super Saver in Perfect Pink, Medium Purple, and Flamingo
• 3 yards size 4 yarn in contrasting color. Red is traditional.
• Size 6.5 mm (US K) crochet hook
• Tapestry needle
• Scissors
• Polyester Fiber Fill

Gauge

9 stitches X 10 rows = 4” square
Stitch used for gauge: Single Crochet

Stitches Used

• CH: chain
• SC: single crochet
• SC2TOG: single crochet two stitches together to decrease
• SLST: slip stitch
• Surface Slip Stitch (video tutorial for this included)

Important Notes

• No matter your skill level, I always suggest that you read through the pattern from beginning to end before beginning your work just to be sure you don’t have any questions that might cause frustration in the midst of your project.
• The initial chain at the beginning of each row is not included in the stitch counts.
• You’ll be working with two strands of yarn held together.
• So, to begin, wind approximately 60 yards of your MC into a ball so that you will work off of that ball and the original skein of yarn.
• The heart begins from the bottom point.

How to Make Your Crochet Conversation Hearts

With size K hook, CH4.

Row 1: SC in the second ch from hook, SC in the next two stitches. (3 sts)

Row 2: (increase) CH1, turn. 2SC in the same stitch as beginning ch1, SC in the next 2 sts, 2SC in the last stitch. (5 sts)

Row 3: (increase) CH1, turn. 2SC in the first stitch, SC in the next 3 sts, 2SC in the last st. (7 sts)

Row 4: (increase) CH1, turn. 2SC in the first stitch, SC in the next 5 sts, 2SC in the last st. (9 sts)

Row 5: (increase) CH1, turn. 2SC in the first stitch, SC in the next 7 sts, 2SC in the last st. (11 sts)

Row 6: CH1, turn. SC in each stitch across. (11 sts)

Row 7: (increase) CH1, turn. 2SC in the first stitch, SC in the next 9 sts, 2SC in the last st. (13 sts)

Row 8: (increase) CH1, turn. 2SC in the first stitch, SC in the next 11 sts, 2SC in the last st. (15 sts)

Row 9: (increase) CH1, turn. 2SC in the first stitch, SC in the next 13 sts, 2SC in the last st. (17 sts)

Row 10: CH1, turn. SC in each stitch across. (17 sts)

Row 11: (increase) CH1, turn. 2SC in the first stitch, SC in the next 15 sts, 2SC in the last st. (19 sts)

Rows 12 – 14: CH1, turn. SC in each stitch across. (19 sts)

From here forward, you will start making the top part of the heart.

Row 15a: CH1, turn. SC in the next 9 sts. Leave the remaining stitches unworked (9 sts)

Row 16a: (decrease) Ch1, turn. SC2TOG, SC in each of the next sts. (8 sts)

Row 17a: (decrease) CH1, turn. SC2TOG, SC in each of the next 4 sts, SC2TOG. (6 sts)

Row 18a: (decrease) CH1, turn. SC2TOG, SC in the next 2 sts, SC2TOG. (4 sts)

Row 19a: (decrease) SC2TOG, SC2TOG.

Finish off.

To complete the heart shape.

Row 15b: With a slip stitch on your hook, SK the first stitch, SC into the next 9 sts. (9 sts)

Row 16b: (decrease) CH1, turn. SC into first 7 sts, SC2TOG across the last 2 stitches. (8 sts)

Row 17b: (decrease) CH1, turn, SC2TOG, SC across the next 4 sts, SCTOG (6 sts)

Row 18b: (decrease) CH1, turn, SC2TOG, SC across the next 2 sts, SC2TOG (4 sts)

Row 19b: (decrease) CH1, turn. SC2TOG, SC2TOG. (2 sts) Finish off.

Tuck ends.

Make second heart.

Adding Embellishments

To Add Wording

Use these charts to plan out what you’d like your heart to say or use the charts already marked for you.

Stitch the letters to the right side of Heart #1 using CC and a tapestry needle.

To Add the Pocket

Foundation: On the right side of the second heart shape, in the space between rows 7 and 8, surface slip stitch 11 stitches.

Row 1: CH1, turn. SC in each stitch across. (11 sts)

Rows 2 – 7: repeat row 1 (11 sts)

Finish off. Tuck ends.

Sew each side of the pocket to the heart shape using CC and tapestry needle.

Finishing

Hold the two heart shapes together with the right side facing out.

EDGE 1: Starting just to the left of the top center of the hearts, with a slip knot on your hook, SC around the outer edge of the heart. (One SC in the end of each row/stitch)

When you reach the point of the heart, work 3SCs into the center stitch.

When you’re about 2/3 of the way around the heart, stuff it to the desired puffiness with the fiberfill. Hold the filling in as you continue your way around.

Continue working SCs around to the middle of the top part of the heart. SLST into the center stitch.

EDGE 2: SC in each stitch around. When you get back to the starting point, finish off and tuck ends.

You’re done! Now tuck a little box of candy or, better yet, a gift card into the little pocket and you have the cutest little Valentine’s gift around!
