I guess it’s May basket month! I just can’t seem to get enough of hanging baskets of all sorts and this design is no exception. The Desert Rose Hanging Planter is a crochet pattern designed to give you one more option for your craft fair inventory or one more, amazingly gorgeous hanging basket to adorn the walls of your home.
A great project for spring, summer, or any time of year, this basket is the perfect little planter for faux succulents or real air plants. If you’d like to use it for real succulents or other live plants, simply cut down the foam cone insert and place your waterproof pot on top.
I designed this particular cone-shaped basket because I have one or two awkward walls in the house that are too narrow for artwork but are the perfect spot for something lovely. So, a vertical hanging basket it is!

Notes
- Skill Level: Easy
- US Terminology
- Gauge: not important for this pattern – size can be adjusted
- Finished Measurements: 6″ tall
- When a row begins with a CH1, the ch does not count as a st.
- When the row begins with a CH2, it does count as a stitch.
Special Stitch:
Cross Stitch (XSt): The cross stitch is a combination of two stitches worked together, crossing one another, to create the cross-stitch effect. Find a video tutorial here (worked in rows, but you’ll get the idea)
Starting a row/round with cross stitch: SK the first ST, SLST into the 2nd st, CH2 (counts as first HDC), HDC in the skipped st.
Mid-row/round cross stitch: SK the next unworked st, HDC in the following st, HDC in the skipped st.
Reverse Single Crochet (RSC): This stitch is worked from left to right (seemingly backward) on the piece. The stitch mechanics are the same as regular single crochet but working in reverse gives them a sort of twisted look. Find a tutorial video here.
With the right side facing you, insert the hook into the next stitch to the right, yarn over and pull the loop through the stitch, yarn over and pull through both loops.

Not a huge deal. But I found an error in the abbreviations. CH – Single Crochet.
Ack! Thank you for letting me know. It’s all fixed now. 🙂
