Every autumn, the mountains behind our property—affectionately known in our family as Grice Mountain—put on a show that stops me in my tracks.

A simple drive up the winding roads is transformed into a full sensory experience: the brilliant golds of the aspens shimmering like coins, the deep greens of the pines anchoring the landscape, and the crisp blue of the Colorado sky tying it all together.

It’s the kind of beauty that makes you breathe a little deeper, slow down, and remember how magical this season truly is.

On one of those drives, the colors felt so vivid and harmonious that I knew I had to bring them into a design.

The Grice Mountain Cowl was born from that moment—an ode to fall in the Rockies, worked in alternating bands of super bulky yarn that mimic the layers of color stretching across the mountain range.

To add even more depth, I used a modified Alpine Stitch—because what’s more fitting than a mountain-inspired stitch for a mountain-inspired pattern?

The raised texture creates beautiful peaks and valleys, catching the light just enough to highlight every color change. The result is a bold, cozy, highly textured cowl that feels like bundling up in autumn itself.

Pattern Notes

• Skill Level: Advanced Beginner
• US Terminology 
• The chain 1 or 2 at the beginning of a row does not count as a stitch.
• This project is worked in rounds.
• Alternate stripes on each row repeating patterns of color A, B, C, and D.
• When joining rounds, you’ll finish the joining SLST with the new color. This is how you’ll change colors from round to round.
• No need to cut colors between rounds. Simply carry the colors up the back seam.

Special Stitches

FOUNDATION SINGLE CROCHET

The Foundation Single Crochet (FSC) creates a stretchy, sturdy base by combining the foundation chain and first row of single crochet (SC) in one step.

Starting with a slip knot, chain 2.
Then work into the second chain from the hook,
Yarn over and pull up a loop.
Yarn over and pull through 2.

For subsequent stitches:
insert hook under the two strands of the previous stitch’s “chain” part,
Yarn over and pull up a loop.
Yarn over and pull through 2.

Yarn over, insert your hook behind the stitch of the row below,
Yarn over and pull up a loop.
You now have 3 loops on your hook.

With 10.00 mm hook and your color A

Round 1: FSC 50. Join with a SLST. (50 FSC)

Round 2: CH2, DC in each st around. Join with SLST to beg DC. (50 DC)

Round 3: CH2, DC in first st, FPDC, *DC, FPDC, repeat from * around. Join with SLST to beg DC. (25 DC, 25 FPDC)

Round 4: CH2, FPDC in first st, DC, *FPDC, DC, repeat from * around. Join with SLST to beg FPDC. (25 FPDC, 25 DC)

Your stitches will alternate with DCs in the FPDC of the row below and FPDCs int he DC of the row below.

Round 5: Repeat round 3.

Round 6: Repeat round 4.
