This hanging May Day Basket is offered free below, from Made with a Twist. The basket was originally designed as a cone-shaped planter but has been beautifully adapted for Springtime to be used as a beautiful gift for neighbors and friends. This makes a lovely addition to any craft market inventory for spring!
Recently, as the snows have finally eased and we’re starting to experience the beauty of spring, Kevin and I were talking about what we could possibly do to cheer our neighbors who are still under “stay at home” orders. We considered baking cookies, but then we had the idea to bring a little sunshine to their doors with the gift of spring…because April showers bring May flowers, of course!
So, I thought, what better way to deliver flowers than in a lovely little hanging May Basket. I quickly altered my pattern for the Desert Rose Planter and turned it into a basket to hang on doorknobs.
A simply handle, attached with wooden buttons, makes this a gift that harkens back to a slower time and I just know it will bring a smile to our neighbors.
I know you’ll enjoy making this basket. It works up in just about an hour and would make a great addition to next year’s spring craft fair inventory. I can’t wait to see what your finished and styled baskets look like, ready to gift and bring joy to those around you!

Stitch Abbreviations
CH – Single Crochet
DC – Double Crochet
HDC – Half-double Crochet
RND – Round
RSC – Reverse Single Crochet (see special stitches)
SLST – Slip Stitch
ST(S) – Stitch(es)
XSt – Cross Stitch (see special stitches)
Special Stitches
Cross-Stitch (XSt): The cross stitch is a combination of two stitches worked together, crossing one another, to create the cross-stitch effect.
Starting a row/round with cross-stitch: SK the first ST, SLST into the 2nd ST, CH2 (counts as first HDC), HDC in the skipped ST.
Mid-row/round cross stitch: SK the next unworked ST, HDC in the following ST, HDC in the skipped ST.
Reverse Single Crochet (RSC or Crab Stitch): This stitch is worked from left to right (seemingly backwards) on the piece. The stitch mechanics are the same as a regular single crochet but working in reverse gives them a sort of twisted look.
With the right side facing you, insert the hook into the next stitch to the right, yarn over and pull the loop through the stitch, yarn over and pull through both loops.
Pattern Notes
- Skill Level: Easy
- US Terminology
- When a row begins with a CH1, the ch does not count as a st.
- When the row begins with a CH2, it does count as a st.
