Make a gauge swatch by making a swatch of at least 6” x 6” dc stitches and make the first row with fdc

Stitch Abbreviations

  • Ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble
  • X-St: x stitch
  • CSDC: chainless starting double crochet
  • Str: starting treble crochet
  • YO: yarn over
  • fdc: foundation double crochet

Special Stitches

CSDC: pull up a loop to the height of the stitch, holding loop, YO (by wrapping around hook), insert hook in first stitch, YO, pull up a loop, [YO, pull through 2 loops] twice

Str: sc in first stitch without a chain 1, insert hook through middle of first sc and under 2 loops, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops, [insert hook through middle of last sc and under 2 loops, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops] twice

X-St: each X-St is followed by a treble as follows – YO 2 times, insert hook in next stitch, YO, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), YO, pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), YO (4 loops on hook), skip next 2 stitches, insert hook in next stitch, YO, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook), [YO, pull through 2 loops] four times, chain 2, YO, insert hook from right to left under two loops in center of the X (not under the legs of the X), YO, pull up a loop, [YO, pull through 2 loops] twice. Complete standard treble crochet in the next st [YO 2 times, insert hook in next stitch, YO, pull up a loop, (YO and pull through 2 loops) three times].

The X-St as written will cover 5 stitches of the row below. The first leg of the X will be in one stitch, two stitches are skipped, and the second leg of the X is placed in the next stitch (4th stitch). The treble crochet is placed in the next stitch (5th stitch of row below). Click here for tutorial.

How to join Fdc in the round: For final fdc, YO and insert hook through foundation chain, YO and pull up loop (3 loops on hook), insert hook through foundation of first st (starting ch-3), YO and pull through two loops (3 loops on hook), [YO, pull through two loops] twice, sl st to 3rd ch to join

Pattern Notes

  • Pattern is written in US terms
  • Be careful to twist Row 1 only once before completing the last fdc
  • After the first row, each round is worked along the top and bottom before joining due to the twist.
  • Each X-St is followed by a tr, so the Str counts as the tr for the last X-St, and all X-Sts and tr cover 5 stitches.
  • The circumference can be adjusted by adding or subtracting multiples of 5.
  • The height can be adjusted by adding or subtracting rounds.
