The idea for the Noelle Pom Pom Hat came together almost by accident.

I’d recently fallen in love with the texture of the herringbone half-double crochet stitch — there’s just something so rich and elegant about the way it catches the light and creates that subtle diagonal pattern. I knew I needed a design that would truly showcase its beauty.

Around the same time, I was brainstorming a festive addition for an upcoming Holiday Bundle, and that’s when inspiration struck.

A cozy, super chunky hat with timeless Christmas vibes — complete with a fluffy pompom — was the perfect match. And just like that, the Noelle Pom Pom Hat was born.

RND 1: With color A and working onto a magic ring or 3SC loop, 8 HBHDC. (8 sts)

RND 2: 2 HBHDC in each st around. (16 sts)

RND 3: *(2 HBHDC in next st, 1 HBHDC in next st). Repeat from * around. (24 sts)

RND 4: *(2 HBHDC in next st, 1 HBHDC in each of next 2 sts). Repeat from * around. (32 sts)

RND 5: *(2 HBHDC in next st, 1 HBHDC in each of next 3 sts). Repeat from * around. (40 sts)

RNDs 6 – 8: HBHDC in each st around. (40 sts)

End color A and join color B with SLST and CH 1.

RNDs 9 – 13: HBHDC in same st as beg CH. HBHDC in each st around. Join with SLST to beg HBHDC. (40 sts)

RND 14: Working in BLO, CH 1. HDC in each st around. Join with SLST to beg HDC. (40 sts)
