The Brave Beanie is being shared in honor of all families battling together to fight childhood cancer as part of the annual Crochet Cancer Challenge.

The One-hour Crochet Hat Design

I designed this hat from the softest acrylic yarn in a super bulky weight so that it would be quick to make and comfortable for even the most sensitive heads. Working up in just one hour, you’ll be able to use this as your go-to pattern for your charity projects.

The project is worked from the top down and has slightly spiraling ribs which meet a simple brim.

One of my favorite features of this hat is that you can style the hat any number of ways, but these are three of my favorite:

Materials Needed for the Brave Beanie

• Lion Brand Hometown USA, super bulky weight #6 yarn. (100% acrylic, 81 yds/74 m per 5 oz/142 g skein)
  • 1 skein MC (Las Vegas Gold or other)
  • 1 skein CC (Dallas Cream)
• (US size M/N) 9.00 mm crochet hook
• (US size K) 6.50 mm crochet hook
• Scissors
• Tapestry needle for tucking ends
• 2″ coconut button (optional)
• 6″ faux fur pom pom (optional)

Gauge

3 HDC rows x 4 HDC sts = 2” sq.

Size: Women’s size 20″ – 22″ head circumference

CH – chain

DC – double crochet

FDC – foundation double crochet

FPDC – front-post double crochet

HDC – half-double crochet

HDC2TOG – half-double crochet 2 together

SC – single crochet

SK – skip

SLST – slip stitch

ST(s) – stitch(es)

How to Make This One-Hour Crochet Beanie

With 9.00 mm (M/N) hook and MC

Rnd 1: Work 7 SCs into a magic circle, pull tight and SLST to join to beginning sc. (7 sts)

Or

CH3, SLST to form a ring. CH1 and work 7 SCs into the loop that is formed. SLST to first SC. (7 sts)

Rnd 2: (increase) CH2 (counts as beginning HDC here and throughout), work one HDC into

the same stitch as beginning ch2. Work 2HDC in each of the remaining 6 sts. Join SLST to

top loop of beginning ch2. (14 sts)

Rnd 3: (increase) CH2, HDC in the same stitch as beginning ch2, FPDC in the next st,

*work 2 HDC in the next st, FPDC in the next st,* repeat * * 5 more times. Join SLST to top

loop of beginning ch2. (21 sts)

Rnd 4: (increase) CH2, HDC in the same stitch as beginning ch2, HDC in the next st, FPDC around the fpdc in the row below, *work 2 HDC in the next st, HDC in the next st, FPDC around the fpdc in the row below,* repeat * * 5 more times. Join SLST to top loop of beginning ch2. (28 sts)

Rnd 5: (increase) CH2, HDC in the same stitch as beginning ch2, HDC in each of the next 2 sts,

FPDC around the fpdc in the row below, *work 2 HDC in the next st, HDC in each of the next 2 sts,

FPDC around the fpdc in the row below,* repeat * * 5 more times. Join SLST to top loop of beginning ch2. (35 sts)

Rnd 6: CH2, HDC in each of the next 3 sts, FPDC around the FPDC in the row below,

*HDC in each of the next 4 sts, FPDC around the FPDC in the row below,* repeat * * 5

more times. Join SLST to top loop of beginning ch2. (35 sts)

Rnds 7 – 11: repeat rnd 6

Finish off.

TO FORM THE BRIM

With 9.00 mm (M/N) hook and CC

Rnd 12: (working in the back loop only) Join CC to last st of rnd 11 with a SLST. SC in the same st and each around. Join with a SLST to first

SC. (35 sts)

Rnd 13: (working through both loops now) CH1, SC in same st as beginning ch1 and in each st around.

Rnds 14 – 15: repeat rnd 13

Finish off. Tuck ends.

To Make the Flower

Rnd 1: Either SC15 into the loop of a magic circle, tighten and join with SLST to beginning

SC. (15 sts)

OR

CH3, join with a SLST to form a loop. CH1 and work 15 SC into the loop. Join with

SLST to beginning SC. (15 sts)

Rnd 2: *CH3, work HDC2TOG across the next 2 sts, CH3 and join with SLST to the next

st.,* repeat 4 more times.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sew flower to brim of hat.
