Peppermint Twist Beanie Crochet Pattern

The inspiration for the Peppermint Twist Beanie came from an unlikely source—our sweet, mischievous Jack Russell, Moe.

Moe is 18 now, but we rescued him when he was six from a traveling vendor who just couldn’t give him the life he deserved.

If you’ve ever rescued a dog, you know the joy (and curiosity!) of uncovering all the little quirks and habits that make them who they are. One of Moe’s? Peppermints.

His previous owner even sent him off with a giant container of peppermint treats—yes, candy—for a dog! I tucked it away years ago, but recently found it in the back of the pantry, filled with cheerful red and white candies.

Something about those swirled stripes sparked an idea, and before long, the Peppermint Twist Hat was born. It captures that same playful spirit—bold, sweet, and full of holiday cheer.

Now I’m thinking… maybe it’s time Moe got a matching one of his own.

• Lion Brand Hometown USA, super bulky weight #6 yarn. (100% acrylic, 81 yds/74 m per 5 oz/142 g skein)
  • 1 skein New York White
  • 1 skein Cincinnati Red
• 9.00 mm (M/N) Crochet Hook
• Scissors
• Sewing needle
• Measuring Tape
• Pom pom, tassel, or buttons (optional)

Pattern Notes (read these)

• Skill Level: Advanced Beginner
• US Terminology 
• Sts worked in BLO throughout unless otherwise indicated
• Beg HDC will be always be worked as a CHDC (instructions to follow). This replaces the customary CH2 when beginning a HDC round.
• To make stripes, you will work each even numbered row in a new color, alternating between the main and coordinating colors throughout.
• As you’re working the piece may not look rectangular but, instead, looks like a parallelogram. That’s OK. Once it’s finished, you can square it up before stitching together.
• Construction: The pattern is worked corner to corner in rows, stitched together, and the brim is added after.

Peppermint Twist Hat Pattern Instructions

Instructions here are for toddler size – 18″ – 19″ circumference (for child – adult large instructions, please upgrade to the premium pattern)

With 9.00 mm hook and white (or color A), CH 2.

Work in the BLO here and throughout the hat portion.

INCREASE ON BOTH SIDES

Row 1: 2 HDC in 2nd CH from hook. (2 HDC)

Row 2: Turn, 2 HDC in each st. (4 HDC)

Row 3: Turn, 2 HDC in 1st st, HDC in each of next 2 sts, 2 HDC in last st. (6 HDC)

Row 4: (Switch colors here and on every even numbered row) Turn, 2 HDC in 1st st, HDC in each st across to last st, 2 HDC in last st. (8 HDC)

Row 5: Repeat row 4. (10 HDC)

Row 6: Repeat row 4. (12 HDC)

When laid flat and squared up, the turning sides should measure approximately 5″.

Row 7: Turn, HDC in each st across to last st, 2 HDC in last stitch. (13 HDC)

ONE SIDE INCREASES, ONE SIDE DECREASES

Row 8: Turn, 2 HDC in first st, HDC in each st across to the last 2, HDC2TOG (13 HDC)

Row 9: Turn, CHDC2TOG, HDC in each st across to last st, 2 HDC in last st. (13 HDC)

Rows 10 – 22: Repeat rows 8 and 9 until the long edge measures approximately 17.5″ (13 HDC)

BOTH SIDES DECREASE

Row 23: Turn, HDC2TOG, HDC in each st to last 2 sts, HDC2TOG (11 HDC)

Rows 24 – 27: Repeat row 23 until your last row with 3 sts remains.

Row 28: Turn, HDC3TOG.

FORM THE TUBE OF THE HAT

Fold with right sides facing, short sides together, and colors matching along the seam (as closely as possible).

SC the tube closed alternating colors to match candy stripes.

Finish off. Turn right side out.

ADD THE BRIM

RND 1: With right side facing you, attach white yarn (or your preferred brim color), with a SLST to center back seam of the hat and evenly space 32 sts around the edge if the hat to make the brim. Catch yarn from color changing in the stitches to hide them. Join with a SLST to beg SC. (32 SC)

RND 2: (Working in BLO) CH1, SC in each st around. Join with SLST to beg SC. (32 SC)

RND 3: (Working through both loops now) CH1, SC in each st around. Join with SLST to beg SC. (32 SC)

RND 4: Repeat round 3. (32 SC)

Finish off.

Tuck ends.

CINCH THE TOP

Weave tail evenly through the stiches of one open end and cinch tightly to close.

Add a faux fur pom pom of your choice.

An Alternate Colorway for the Christmas Grouch

Go from the two color to the three color option. It’s easy!

Simply choose which colors you’ll feature and modify the striping as desired. Here, we have the red as the primary and lime green and white as secondary colors. It’s so fun, there’s whole rainbow of options for creating unique twirly, swirly beanies.

Note, where you place the secondary colors and which side you select as the “right’ side will dictate which colors are more prominent and which way the swirl twists.

For these, I used two strands of I Love This Yarn in Limelight, Red, and Antique White.
