Ribbed Double Brim Hat: Free Crochet Pattern

This free pattern for the gorgeous double-brim crochet hat, the Keystone Double Brim Beanie, is made from worsted weight (size 4) yarn and has incredible texture and squishiness. It is absolutely one of my favorite hats to make and wear…gosh, now I think I need to go make another one!

Easy enough for a beginner, this easy to make beehive-style beanie is the squishiest hat I’ve ever designed!

It’s so warm and cozy, looks great and will help you become a pro at post stitches!

Here’s everything you need to know to make your own Teen/Women’s Small Keystone Ribbed Double Brim Beanie. For more sizes, upgrade to the premium PDF with sizes from teen through women’s XL.

Materials

• Hook – 6.50 mm (US K) crochet hook
• 230 yards (size 4) worsted weight yarn – I like to use a non-pilling type of yarn for the best results.
• Needle
• Optional Faux Fur Pompom
• Sewing scissors
• Optional: Product Tag – I get mine here.

• CH:     chain
• DC:     double crochet
• FDC:   foundation double crochet
• FPDC: front-post double crochet
• BPDC: back-post double crochet
• SLST:   slip stitch
• ST(S):   stitch(es)

• Gauge: 12 stitches X 15 rows = 4” square working in alternating DC, BPDC.
• No matter your skill level, I always suggest that you read through the pattern from beginning to end before beginning your work just to be sure you don’t have any questions that might cause frustration in the midst of your project.

Make Your Ribbed Double Brim Hat

With 6.50 mm (K) hook

Making the Double Brim

RND 1: CH3, FDC 47, join with a slip stitch to top of beginning CH3. Use tail to sew the bottom of the CH3 and last FDC closed to form the first round of the brim. 48 STS

RND 2: CH3 (counts as DC here and throughout), *FPDC, BPDC,* repeat from * to * around. FPDC in the last stitch. Join with a SLST to top of beginning CH3. 48 STS

RNDS 3 – 7: repeat round 2

RND 8: CH3, *BPDC, FPDC,* repeat from * to * around. BPDC in the last stitch. Join with a SLST to top of beginning CH3. 48 STS

RNDS 9 – 13: repeat round 8

RND 14: With the right side of the hat facing you, fold the bottom half of the brim into the top half so the unworked loops of the foundation row match up with the loops of row 13.

CH3, Stitch the brim closed by working a DC in each stitch around, matching round 13 stitches with unworked loops of FDC stitches. Join with a SLST to top of beginning CH3. Now, your double brim is made. 48 STS

Making the Top Part of the Hat

RND 15: CH3, BPDC in each stitch around. Join with a SLST to top of beginning CH3. 48 STS

RND 16:  repeat round 15

RND 17: CH3, FPDC in each stitch around. Join with a SLST to top of beginning CH3.

48 STS

RND 18: repeat round 17

RNDS 19 – 22: repeat rounds 15 -18.

RND 23: CH3, BPDC in each stitch around. Join with a SLST to top of beginning CH3. 48 STS

RND 24: repeat round 17.

RND 25: CH3, FPDC in each of the next 2 stitches, FPDC decrease across the next 2 stitches, *FPDC in each of the next 3 stitches, FPDC decrease,* repeat from * to * around. FPDC in any remaining stitches. Join with SLST to top of beginning CH3.

RND 26: CH3, FPDC in the next stitch, FPDC decrease across the next 2 stitches, *FPDC in the next 2 stitches, FPDC decrease,* repeat from * to * around. FPDC in any remaining stitches. Join with a SLST to top of beginning CH3.

RND 27: CH3, BPDC decrease across the next 2 stitches, *BPDC in the next stitch, BPDC across the next 2 stitches,* repeat from * to * around. BPDC in any remaining stitches. Join with a SLST to top of beginning CH3.

RND 29: CH3, *BPDC decrease across the next 2 stitches,* repeat from * to * around. BPDC in any remaining stitch.

RND 29: CH2, SLST in each stitch around.

Finish off. Sew top closed with tail. Attach pompom and tuck in ends.
