Some projects are just plain fun to make, and this is one of them. The Scrappy Autumn Cup Cozy starts with a simple sleeve, then gets dressed up with contrasting edging, a big flower, and two leaves. Scrappy Autumn Cup Cozy: Free Crochet Pattern
This free crochet cup cozy pattern is worked in bulky yarn with a 6 mm hook. The sleeve is made in rounds of single crochet, and the flower and leaves are stitched on at the end. Make the sample colors shown here, or raid your stash and give yours a completely different personality.
Why you’ll love this Autumn Coffee Sleeve pattern
What makes this crochet coffee cup sleeve different?
A lot of crochet cup sleeves stop at the basic band. Here, the straightforward single crochet base gives the dimensional flower room to shine. A cream chain-and-single-crochet border frames the top and bottom, while two leaves add a playful, layered finish. It’s a small project with plenty of personality.
The sample uses deep teal for the sleeve, cream edging and petals, a mustard flower center, and two contrasting leaf colors. But “scrappy” is right there in the name: choose colors from the bulky yarn you already have. For a softer look, stick with muted shades; for a bolder cozy, let your brightest remnants have their moment.

- The beginning chain 1 does not count as a stitch.
- Work the sleeve in joined rounds and keep the join at the center back.
- The decorative border puts one single crochet into each sleeve stitch, with a chain 1 between single crochets. Work the reverse single crochet through the center of each leaf before sewing the motifs down.
- The petal and leaf layers can be arranged however you like.
- Paper takeaway cups vary in shape and circumference. The stated finished size is for the sample, so check your fit as you work.
- Keep the cozy below the lid and make sure it stays secure when you lift the cup.

Special Stitches
Reverse Single Crochet (RSC)
Sc in the space where you’ll start your round.
Insert hook in next stitch to the left (for right-handed crocheters).
Yarn over and pull up a loop (you should have two loops on your hook).
Yarn over again and pull through both loops on the hook. This completes one reverse single crochet.
Once you reach the end, cut the yarn and pull it through the last loop to secure it.

Surface Slip Stitch (Sslst)
With a loop on your hook, insert hook into the fabric where you want to start the stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop through the loop on your hook.
This completes the slst.
Repeat: continue this process to create a line of stitches.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this crochet cup cozy pattern beginner friendly?
It’s rated advanced beginner. The sleeve uses basic single crochet, while the separate flower and leaves introduce shaping, surface stitching, and sewing pieces together. If you’ve made a small project in the round before, this is a fun next step.
What size cup does this cozy fit?
The sample sleeve measures approximately 5 inches wide and 4 inches tall laid flat. The cup I used in the same is 16 oz. Cups differ, so there is no guaranteed commercial cup size. Try it on the cup you plan to use and adjust the starting chain in a way that maintains your intended circumference if needed.
Can I use a different yarn?
Yes. A comparable bulky weight (#5) yarn is the closest substitution. A different weight or fiber can change the size and stretch, so test the fit as you go. For a washable version, follow the care instructions for the exact yarn you choose.
Do I need five full skeins?
No. The sample uses five colors, but the flower center, petals, borders, and leaves need only small amounts. The PDF does not provide exact yardage, so gather enough of your chosen yarn to complete the pieces rather than relying on a specific scrap length.
Can I change the flower or leaf colors?
Absolutely. Use the pattern’s colors as a starting point and mix what you have. You can also position the flower and leaves to suit your cup and your style.
Can I sell cup cozies made from this pattern?
Yes. Made with a Twist permits sales of finished items made from the pattern. When possible, please credit the designer by mentioning madewithatwist.com or tagging @madewithatwist. The written pattern and images may not be redistributed, sold, or claimed as your own.
