Today’s pattern is brought to us by Vicky of Cosy Crochet and it’s a special amigurumi dinosaur crochet pattern that will be such a treat for any child to find under the tree this year. It’s Day 15 of 30 Days of Cozy…and this one is for all the little boys out there. Here’s what Vicky has to say about the pattern:

The Therizinosaurus is one of the newest discovered dinosaurs, found in the 1940s in the Gobi Desert, Mongolia. It lived in the Cretaceous period and had claws up to 1.5 meters long, though he was actually a herbivore.

My 5-year-old son, Oliver, who is mad about dinosaurs instantly fell in love with this dinosaur once he saw it. He saved all his money to buy the toy and watch and reads about it all the time. He wanted his own cuddly Therizinosaurus, although they are not that easy to find, so I decided to make him one.

I couldn’t find any Therizinosaurus patterns on the internet, so I decided to create my own. Throughout the creation period, Oliver was excited and impatient to get his Therizinosaurus and now finished, it sleeps on his bed with him every night.

This dinosaur was created for my dinosaur mad son, but I am sure there are others out there with children who would also love this dinosaur made for them too. Below, you’ll find the free pattern for the baby dinosaur.

Materials

• Paintbox Simply Aran – 100g balls in any colours you choose – I used the following colours
  • Granite Grey (206)
  • Dusty Lilac (246)
  • Vanilla Cream (207)
  • Odd amounts of white, red and green (for teeth, eyes and tongue)
• Aldi Chunky Vanilla Yarn (or equivalent weight) (for egg only)
• 3mm hook & 6mm (egg only)
• Stuffing
• 6 pipe cleaners
• Tapestry needle
• Scissors
• Stitch marker

Stitches Used

• Sc – single crochet
• Ch – chain
• Sc inc – sc increase
• Sc dec – sc decrease
• m/c – magic circle
• sl st – slip stitch
• s-sc – surface single crochet
• s-sl st – surface slip stitch
• fsc – foundation single crochet
• 3 dc tog – 3 double crochets together – yarn over, insert hook and pull up a loop, yarn over and through 2 loops, leave remaining 2 loops on the hook, repeat this 2 more times and then yarn over and pull through all loops

Pattern Details

• Skill Level: Intermediate
• US Terminology
• The bold numbers at the end of each line of the pattern indicate the number of stitches in the row/round.
• There is no specific gauge for this dinosaur, you will need to work as tightly as you can.
• The dinosaur is made in separate parts, some are joined together as you crochet and others are sewn on.
• Pipe cleaners are placed inside the limbs and down the spine to create support and shape for the dinosaur to allow him to stand up.
• Do not ch 1 at the end of the rows, just turn and work next row, this creates a neater edge.
• Do not sl st and join when working in the round unless otherwise stated as this gives a neater look
• The dinosaur’s eyes are sewn on using a French knot, you could use 3mm safety eyes in green if you have them but sewn on works better for this size of the dinosaur.
• The finished dinosaur is 30cm long from tail to head when stretch out and 12 cm wide.

Cast off

Attach yarn in middle of tail (row 1) and s-sc all the way down the back to
create the spin

Turn the back over and fold 2 pipe cleaners in half and twist them, then
sew down the back in line with the spine on the other side.

Cast off

You now need to sc the back and body pieces together. Position the pieces
so the tails are together and the insides facing each other (make sure the
pipe cleaners are on the inside). Then hold the pieces so the back is
towards you, starting at the neck and working round to the tail and back to
the neck again single crochet the pieces together in granite grey. Stuff tail
and body as you go.

Shape the finished body so the neck bends in and the tail goes out (refer to
the pictures for help)

RND 1 Ch 6 and sl st to form a ring 6
RND 2-4 Sc around 6

Fold pipe cleaner into 4 and twist together, then insert it into the leg and stuff
around it

Sew leg to the body starting at the base of row 22 on the body, it leg should fit
nicely under the belly portion rows of 30-44. Use the pipe cleaners to on the

Use the pipe cleaners to shape the legs.

Cast off and sew shut. Sew a few stitches through the toes to help the
sit right you should have the middle claw slightly higher than the other
two.

Sew foot underneath legs with back toes pointing towards each other

Fold a pipe cleaner in 4 and twist together, insert through arm and stuff
around it

Cast off and sew shut, if the claws are too far apart use a few stitches to
sew them closer together

Sew arms to body above the belly section of rows 33-44 and use pipe
cleaners to shape arms.

Therizinosaurus Lower Jaw – make 1 starting in vanilla cream

Switch to Granite Grey

Under one side of the jaw and using granite grey, s-sc around the edge to
create a jawline (leave rows 1-2 untouched)

Using white, s-sl st inside of the jawline created in round 10 to make the
teeth

Sl st and cast off

Use lilac to s-sc around the inside of the mouth on the lilac side to create the jaw

Using white, s-sl st inside of the jawline created in round 10 to make the teeth

Therizinosaurus Tongue – work in red

RND 1 fsc 1, then turn and sl st in the same stitch 1

Cast off and sew to the back of the mouth

Sew head to neck using lilac on the top side and granite on the lower side

Finish off the Therizinosaurus by using French knots in green to sew on eyes in the 3dc tog spots created in round 9 of the head.
