Whispering Pines Unisex Beanie Crochet Pattern
The first chill of the season always sneaks up on me — that moment when the morning air bites just enough to make you reach for something warm. Last year, it was on a quiet Saturday when I headed out for coffee and realized I didn’t have a single hat that truly fit me right. Too slouchy, too tight, or it didn’t cover my ears.
So I pulled out my hook and a few skeins of super chunky yarn and set out to create what I’d been missing — the perfect unisex beanie that was quick to make so I could stitch up several to have on hand in truck, in the barn, by the back door.
I wanted to design one that looked just as good on my husband as it did on me, simple enough for everyday wear yet stylish enough for photos and gifting. What came off my hook became a family favorite — the hat everyone keeps “borrowing.” Now it’s your turn to make one (or three!) of your own.

Whispering Pines Beanie Pattern Instructions
START HERE FOR ALL SIZES
Work each row in the BACK LOOP ONLY through rnd 15.
Start with a magic ring or work a 3 sc loop.
Rnd 1: 7 sc in ring/loop. Place a stitch marker here to note the end of round. (7 sts)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around. (14 sts)
Rnd 3: *1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st,* repeat * * around. (21 sts)
Rnd 4: *1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st,* repeat * * around. (28 sts)
Rnd 5: 1 sc in each st around. (28 sts)
Rnd 6: 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st,* repeat * * around to marker (35 sts)
Depending on size, continue to section “For Women”, “For Men” or, “For Men’s XL”.
For Women’s:
Rnds 7 – 14: 1 sc in each st around until hat measures 7” from center of crown to last row (35 sts)
Rnd 15: 1 sc in the next 6 sts, hdc in the next 3 sts, sc in the next 17 sts, hcd in the next 3 sts, sc in the next 6 sts. (35 sts)
Rnd 16: (work in BOTH loops) 1 sc in the next 4 sts, hdc in the next 7 sts, sc in the next 13 sts, hdc in the next 7 sts, sc in the next 4 sts. (35 sts)
Rnd 17: (work in BOTH loops) 1 sc in the next 3 sts, hdc in the next 10 sts, sc in the next 9 sts, hdc in the next 10 sts, sc in the next 2 sts, slst into last st. (35 sts)
Fasten off. The marker will be in the center back.
Proceed to “Adding Tag”
For Men
Rnd 7: Work 2 SC in the next st and one SC in each remaining st around. (36 sts)
Rnd 8: Work 1 SC in each st around until hat measures 7” from center of crown. (36 sts)
Rnd 9: Work 1 SC in the next 6 sts, HDC in the next 3 sts, SC in the next 18 sts, HDC in the next 3 sts, SC in the next 6 sts. (36 sts)
Rnd 10: (working over BOTH loops now) Work 1 SC in the next 4 sts, HDC in the next 7 sts, SC in the next 14 sts, HDC in the next 7 sts, SC in the next 4 sts. (36 sts)
Rnd 11: (working over BOTH loops) Work 1 SC in the next 3 sts, HDC in the next 10 sts, SC in the next 10 sts, HDC in the next 10 sts, SC in the next 3 sts. (36 sts)
Fasten off.
Proceed to “Adding Tag”
For Men’s XL
Rnd 7: Work *1 SC in each of the next 9 sts, 2 SC in the next st,* repeat * * 2 more times, SC in each of the last 5 sts . (38 sts)
Rnd 8: Work 1 SC in each st around until hat measures 7.5” from center of crown (38 sts)
Rnd 9: Work 1 SC in the next 6 sts, HDC in the next 3 sts, SC in the next 20 sts, HDC in the next 3 sts, SC in the next 6 sts. (38 sts)
Rnd 10: (working over BOTH loops now) Work 1 SC in the next 4 sts, HDC in the next 7 sts, SC in the next 16 sts, HDC in the next 7 sts, SC in the next 4 sts. (38 sts)
Rnd 11: (working over BOTH loops) Work 1 SC in the next 3 sts, HDC in the next 10 sts, SC in the next 12 sts, HDC in the next 10 sts, SC in the next 3 sts. (38 sts)
Fasten off.
Proceed to “Adding Tag”
ADDING A TAG
In a coordinating color, work a “tag” in the center back by stitching around and around 2-3 of the back stitches (see picture at end). This makes it easy to find the back when putting on the hat.
